Wedding Invitations – Tips for Creating the Perfect Invitation
Your guests’ wedding experience journey starts with the invitation. It sets the tone, communicates your style, and gives the first glimpse into your wedding aesthetic. But what are the most important things to consider when ordering your wedding invitations? Should you still send a physical printed invitation in today’s digital world, or is an online wedding invitation enough?
While digital options are convenient, the art of a physical invitation has become more special than ever—something rare, cherished, and beautifully personal.
Why You Shouldn’t Just Use a Free Wedding Invitation Template
Your wedding invitation design should be more than just your names typed into a Canva template.
Since the invitation marks the beginning of your guests’ visual journey, it should reflect your wedding location, theme, and signature color palette.
This is why it’s best to work on your invitations with your wedding designer, ensuring every detail ties seamlessly into your overall concept.
A wedding designer helps create a consistent visual story, making sure your invitations match the overall wedding aesthetic, from the first envelope to the reception table decor.

Printed vs Digital Wedding Invitations
Let me be a little traditional here: printed wedding invitations all the way.
If you’re expecting your guests to show up in person, giving them something they can touch, keep, and treasure feels only natural.
That said, if you have international guests spread across several countries, mailing printed invitations can become time-consuming and expensive. In that case, you can combine both:
- Send physical invitations to family and close friends,
- and matching digital e-invitations to everyone else.
Still, if you decide to go the extra mile and hand out real invitations to everyone, it’s an emotional gesture that truly pays off and gives you a wonderful reason to reconnect with people you haven’t seen in a while.

How Many Wedding Invitations Do You Need?
Typically, you’ll need invitations for about 50–70% of your total guest count.
Couples and family members living together receive one invitation.
What Should a Wedding Invitation Include?
The essentials are simple:
- Your names
- The wedding location
- The starting time
Avoid overloading the design with too much text or quotes — minimalist invitations photograph better and feel more elegant. If you have extra details (like the wedding weekend schedule or transportation info), include them in separate cards or on your wedding website.
Should You Have a Wedding Website if You Send Invitations?
Absolutely! A wedding website is a great place for:
- Travel and accommodation recommendations for destination weddings,
- Transportation details,
- Local restaurants and activity ideas for your guests flying in.
It complements your printed invitation perfectly.

Unique Wedding Invitation Ideas
If you want to create unique and luxury wedding invitations, consider personal touches such as:
- Custom paintings of your venue, pets, or initials
- A bespoke wax seal stamp
- Hand-painted or custom envelope liners
- Embossed or letterpress details
Your wedding designer can help develop custom ideas that fit both your vision and budget.
AI-Generated Art on Invitations – Should You Use Them?
I would strongly advise against it. While AI-generated designs are becoming popular, they often look artificial and lack the genuine artistry of a handcrafted invitation. Real design still matters.
When to Send Wedding Invitations
If you don’t yet have all details finalized, send a digital Save the Date first — around 12–16 months before the wedding.
Then, send your printed invitations 3–6 months before the wedding (closer to 6 months for destination weddings) to give your guests enough time to book flights and accommodation.
Price of Wedding Invitations
When planning your wedding stationery, it’s important to understand the cost of bespoke wedding invitations. Prices depend on design complexity, materials, and printing method, but here’s a general guideline for the 2026 wedding season (VAT included):
- Single card, double-sided invitation (A6 size): from €6.50 / piece
- 2–3 card wedding suit: from €7.50 / piece
- Custom wax seal stamp: €60 (one-time design and production)
- Wax seals applied to each invitation: +€0.80 / piece
- Custom design fee: added separately, depending on the concept and artwork
Each invitation is hand-designed and printed to order, reflecting your unique style and the overall wedding aesthetic.
Your wedding invitation is the very first touchpoint of your celebration — a small piece of art that sets the tone for everything that follows. Whether you go with classic printed invitations or a hybrid modern approach, make it meaningful, personal, and aligned with your wedding story.
